We are simply too familiar with the cross of Christ. We are inured to its presence on our walls, in our churches, and hanging around the necks of practically everyone we know! With the possible exception of Holy Week (and especially Good Friday), we tend to overlook the bracing fact that the cross was originally an instrument of torture and execution, especially popular as a means to quell rebellions and to intimidate the peoples of occupied lands. The actual cross of Jesus was no lovely piece of home decor or jewelry – it was an ugly, bloody, violent thing designed to extend and intensify the suffering of those doomed to die on it. But this ugly, cruel instrument of suffering and death now takes on new meaning in light of the transforming reality of Christ’s Resurrection from the dead.
